Like fire in a field of thorns
If, heaven forbid, there is a fire in a field of thorns, it spreads quickly and burns the entire field.
אִם, חָס וְחָלִילָה, יֵשׁ אֵשׁ בְּשָׂדֶה שֶׁל קוֹצִים הִיא מִתְפַּשֶּׁטֶת בִּמְהִירוּת וְשׂוֹרֶפֶת אֶת כָּל הַשָּׂדֶה.
We mainly use this expression when talking about rumors, harmful gossip, or difficult news.
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה בְּעִיקָּר כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ מְדַבְּרִים עַל שְׁמוּעָה אוֹ רְכִילוּת רָעָה אוֹ חֲדָשׁוֹת קָשׁוֹת.
When we say: "This rumor spread like fire in a field of thorns," we refer to the speed at which the rumor became known to others, just as fire spreads rapidly in a field of thorns.
כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ אוֹמְרִים: הַשְּׁמוּעָה הַזֹּאת הִתְפַּשְּׁטָה כְּאֵשׁ בִּשְׂדֵה קוֹצִים, אֲנַחְנוּ מִתְכַּוְּנִים לַמְּהִירוּת שֶׁבָּהּ הַשְּׁמוּעָה נוֹדְעָה לַאֲחֵרִים, בְּדִיּוּק כְּפִי שֶׁאֵשׁ מִתְפַּשֶּׁטֶת בִּשְׂדֵה קוֹצִים בִּמְהִירוּת.
We also refer to the fact that it is impossible to change the situation. Just as the fire in a field of thorns burns and destroys everything, leaving no way to alter the outcome.
אֲנַחְנוּ גַּם מִתְכַּוְּנִים לָעוּבְדָּה שֶׁאִי אֶפְשָׁר לְשַׁנּוֹת אֶת הַמַּצָּב. בְּדִיּוּק כְּפִי שֶׁהָאֵשׁ בִּשְׂדֵה קוֹצִים שׂוֹרֶפֶת וּמַשְׁמִידָה אֶת הַכֹּל, וְאֵין אֶפְשָׁרוּת לְשַׁנּוֹת אֶת הַמַּצָּב.
