This is an interesting verb meaning to cause someone to be surprised but really surprised!

זֶה שֵׁם פֹּעַל מְעַנְיֵן שֶׁמַּשְׁמָעוּתוֹ לִגְרוֹם לְמִישֶׁהוּ לִהְיוֹת מוּפְתָּע אֲבָל מַמָּשׁ מוּפְתָּע!

The participants in the cooking shows on television try to astonish the judges with special dishes. They try to astonish the judges both with the appearance of the dish and with its flavors.

הַמִּשְׁתַּתְּפִים בְּתָכְנִיּוֹת הַבִּישּׁוּל בַּטֶּלֶוִיזְיָה מְנַסִּים לְהַדְהִים אֶת הַשּׁוֹפְטִים עִם מָנוֹת מְיוּחָדוֹת. הֵם מְנַסִּים לְהַדְהִים אֶת הַשּׁוֹפְטִים גַּם בַּמַּרְאֶה שֶׁל הַמָּנָה וְגַם בַּטְּעָמִים שֶׁלָּהּ.

So, it is possible to astonish with meals and flavors, and it is possible to astonishus with spectacular fireworks displays, like what various municipalities try to do on Independence Day.

אָז אֶפְשָׁר לְהַדְהִים בַּאֲרוּחוֹת וּטְעָמִים וְאֶפְשָׁר לְהַדְהִים אוֹתָנוּ בְּאֶמְצָעוּת מוֹפְעֵי זִיקּוּקִים מַרְהִיבִים כְּמוֹ שֶׁמְּנַסּוֹת עִירִיּוֹת שׁוֹנוֹת בְּרַחֲבֵי הָאָרֶץ לַעֲשׂוֹת בְּיוֹם הָעַצְמָאוּת.

Sometimes, there are people who perhaps are not even trying, but somehow manage to astonishme with their level of stupidity... For instance, many people around the world have succeeded in astonishing us with their support for the atrocious acts of Hamas.
