To prefer
The meaning of the verb to prefer (leha'adif) is to choose something over something else or to like something more than something else.
מַשְׁמָעוּתוֹ שֶׁל שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל לְהַעֲדִיף הִיא לִבְחוֹר בְּמַשֶּׁהוּ עַל פְּנֵי מַשֶּׁהוּ אַחֵר, אוֹ לֶאֱהוֹב מַשֶּׁהוּ יוֹתֵר מִמַּשֶּׁהוּ אַחֵר.
In general, parents should not prefer one of their children over the others; all of them should be equal in their eyes.
בְּדֶרֶךְ כְּלָל הַהוֹרִים לֹא צְרִיכִים לְהַעֲדִיף אַף אֶחָד מִן הַיְּלָדִים שֶׁלָּהֶם עַל פְּנֵי הָאֲחֵרִים, כּוּלָּם צְרִיכִים לִהְיוֹת שָׁוִים בְּעֵינֵיהֶם.
However, if someone is dieting, then when choosing between pizza or salad, they should prefer the salad. And in choosing between watching television or doing physical activity, it is, of course, advisable to prefer physical activity.
אֲבָל אִם מִישֶׁהוּ עוֹשֶׂה דִּיאֶטָה, אָז בַּבְּחִירָה בֵּין פִּיצָה אוֹ סָלָט כְּדַאי לוֹ לְהַעֲדִיף אֶת הַסָּלָט. וּבַבְּחִירָה בֵּין לִצְפּוֹת בַּטֶּלֶוִיזְיָה לְבֵין פְּעִילוּת גּוּפָנִית, כְּדַאי, כַּמּוּבָן, לְהַעֲדִיף אֶת הַפְּעִילוּת הַגּוּפָנִית.

אִם אַתֶּם צְרִיכִים לְהַעֲדִיף בֵּין הַטַּעַם הַמָּתוֹק לַטַּעַם הַמָּלוּחַ – מָה תַּעֲדִיפוּ?
