To embitter
In the box of infinitives, we can find the infinitive to worsen. When we discussed it, we saw that it contains the adjective "hot\spicy." Similarly, in the verb to embitter (lemarer), we can find the adjective "bitter," which is also one of the tastes.
יֵשׁ לָנוּ בְּקוּפְסַת שְׁמוֹת הַפֹּעַל אֶת שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל לְהַחֲרִיף. כְּשֶׁדִּבַּרְנוּ עַל שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל לְהַחֲרִיף רָאִינוּ שֶׁאֶפְשָׁר לִרְאוֹת בְּתוֹכוֹ אֶת שֵׁם הַתּוֹאַר 'חָרִיף'. גַּם בְּשֵׁם הַפֹּעַל לְמָרֵר אֲנַחְנוּ יְכוֹלִים לִרְאוֹת אֶת שֵׁם הַתּוֹאַר 'מַר' וְגַּם הוּא אֶחָד מִן הַטְּעָמִים.
Just as we mentioned regarding the verb to worsen that it is not used in the context of food, the same applies to the verb to embitter.
וְגַם כְּפִי שֶׁאָמַרְנוּ לְגַבֵּי שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל 'לְהַחֲרִיף' שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ לֹא מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בּוֹ בְּעִנְיְנֵי אוֹכֶל כָּךְ גַּם לְגַבֵּי שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל 'לְמָרֵר'.
We use the verb to embitter in its metaphorical sense, meaning to cause something to become more difficult and less pleasant.
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בְּשֵׁם הַפֹּעַל לְמָרֵר בַּמַּשְׁמָעוּת הַמֵּטָאפוֹרִית שֶׁהִיא לִגְרוֹם לְמַשֶּׁהוּ לִהְיוֹת יוֹתֵר קָשֶׁה וּפָחוֹת נָעִים.
This verb can also be used in a modern context when we want to say that someone is trying to make our lives harder, whether at work or in our personal lives.
כָּךְ גַּם אֶפְשָׁר לְהִשְׁתַּמּ ֵשׁ בְּשֵׁם הַפֹּעַל הַזֶּה בְּמַשְׁמָעוּת מוֹדֶרְנִית, כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ רוֹצִים לְהַגִּיד שֶׁמִּישֶׁהוּ רוֹצֶה לַעֲשׂוֹת לָנוּ חַיִּים קָשִׁים בָּעֲבוׄדָה אוֹ בַּחַיִּים הַפְּרָטִיִּים.
