A costume - Costumes
The root of the word "תחפושת" (costume) is ח.פ.ש which makes a lot of sense, because when a person is disguised, we do not recognize them, and it makes us search for them.
שׁוֹרֶשׁ הַמִּילָּה תַּחְפּוֹשֶׂת הוּא ח.פ.ש וְזֶה מְאוֹד הֶגְיוֹנִי, כִּי כַּאֲשֶׁר אָדָם מִתְחַפֵּשׂ אֲנַחְנוּ לֹא מַכִּירִים אוֹתוֹ וְזֶה גּוֹרֵם לָנוּ לְחַפֵּשׂ אוֹתוֹ.
The verb "התחפש" (disguise) originates from the Bible: "And Saul disguised himself and put on other clothes" (1 Samuel 28:8).
הַפֹּעַל הִתְחַפֵּשׂ מְקוֹרוֹ בַּתּנ"ךְ: "וַיִּתְחַפֵּשׂ שָׁאוּל וַיִּלְבַּשׁ בְּגָדִים אֲחֵרִים" (שְׁמוּאֵל א כח, ח).
King Saul wanted to go to a necromancer (a woman who performs rituals to summon the dead), but he knew that summoning the dead is a forbidden act, so he disguised himself so that he would not be recognized.
שָׁאוּל הַמֶּלֶךְ רָצָה לָלֶכֶת לְבַעֲלַת הָאוֹב (=אִשָּׁה שֶׁעוֹשָׂה טִקְסֵי טְרַנְס לְהַעֲלָאַת הַמֵּתִים) אֲבָל הוּא יָדַע שֶׁהַעֲלָאָה בָּאוֹב הִיא מַעֲשֶׂה שֶׁאָסוּר לַעֲשׂוֹת אָז הוּא הִתְחַפֵּשׂ כְּדֵי שֶׁלֹּא יַכִּירוּ אוֹתוֹ.
Purim is a big feast for children. All the children prepare their costumes before Purim, and on Purim day, they wear them and go out to the parades in the place where they live. It’s a wonderful sight.
חַג פּוּרִים הוּא חַג גָּדוֹל לִילָדִים. כָּל הַיְּלָדִים מְכִינִים אֶת הַתַּחְפּוֹשֶׂת שֶׁלָּהֶם לִפְנֵי הַחַג וּבְיוֹם הַחַג הֵם לוֹבְשִׁים אוֹתָהּ וְיוֹצְאִים לַתַּהֲלוּכוֹת בַּמָּקוֹם שֶׁבּוֹ הֵם גָּרִים. זֶה מַרְאֶה נֶהְדָּר.
