As a bow from an arrow
One of the ancient customs of the Lag Ba'Omer is playing with a bow and arrow.
This is a custom that originated during the Bar Kochba revolt.
אֶחָד הַמִּנְהָגִים הָעַתִּיקִים שֶׁל ל"ג בָּעוֹמֶר הוּא מִשְׂחָק בְּחֵץ וָקֶשֶׁת.
זֶהוּ מִנְהָג שֶׁמְּקוֹרוֹ בַּתְּקוּפָה שֶׁל מֶרֶד בַּר כּוֹכְבָא.
Bar Kochba, the leader of the revolt against the Romans, trained the students of Rabbi Akiva with a bow and arrow because they were not warriors but were Torah scholars and did not know how to use a sword.
בַּר כּוֹכְבָא, מַנְהִיג הַמֶּרֶד נֶגֶד הָרוֹמָאִים אִמֵּן אֶת תַּלְמִידָיו שֶׁל רַבִּי עֲקִיבָא בְּחֵץ וָקֶשֶׁת כִּי הֵם לֹא הָיוּ לוֹחֲמִים אֶלָּא בְּנֵי תּוֹרָה וְלֹא יָדְעוּ לְהִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בְּחֶרֶב.
When we see someone shooting an arrow from a bow, we fail to notice the path that the arrow makes until it reaches the target board because it is so fast.
כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ רוֹאִים מִישֶׁהוּ יוֹרֶה חֵץ מִקֶּשֶׁת אֲנַחְנוּ כִּמְעַט וְלֹא מַצְלִיחִים לְהַבְחִין בַּמַּסְלוּל שֶׁהַחֵץ עוֹשֶׂה עַד שֶׁהוּא מַגִּיעַ לְלוּחַ הַמַּטָּרָה כִּי זֶה נוֹרָא מַהֵר.
We use this expression when we want to say that something happens very fast, for example:
He ran like an arrow from a bow (i.e. he is running very fast).
He speaks like an arrow from a bow (i.e. he is talking very fast and it is impossible to understand what he is saying).
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ רוֹצִים לְהַגִּיד שֶׁמַּשֶּׁהוּ קוֹרֶה נוֹרָא מַהֵר, לְמָשָׁל:
הוּא רָץ כְּחֵץ מִקֶּשֶׁת (כְּלוֹמַר הוּא רָץ מַהֵר מְאוֹד).
הוּא מְדַבֵּר כְּחֵץ מִקֶּשֶׁת (כְּלוֹמַר הוּא מְדַבֵּר מַהֵר מְאוֹד וְאִי אֶפְשָׁר לְהָבִין מָה הוּא אוֹמֵר).
