Fifth wheel
Everyone knows that a car has four wheels, and the fifth wheel is a spare tire, usually stored in the trunk and used only in emergencies.
כּוּלָּם יוֹדְעִים שֶׁלָּרֶכֶב יֵשׁ אַרְבָּעָה גַּלְגַּלִּים וְהַגַּלְגַּל הַחֲמִישִׁי הוּא גַּלְגַּל רֵזֶרְבִי שֶׁנִּמְצָא בְּדֶרֶךְ כְּלָל בְּתָא הַמִּטְעָן שֶׁל הָרֶכֶב וּמוֹצִיאִים אוֹתוֹ לְשִׁימּוּשׁ רַק בְּמִקְרֵה חֵירוּם.
Someone who goes out with a couple or two couples but is single themselves might feel like they are a fifth wheel.
מִישֶׁהוּ שֶׁיָּצָא לְבַלּוֹת עִם זוּג אוֹ שְׁנֵי זוּגוֹת וְהוּא עַצְמוֹ אֵין לוֹ בֶּן זוּג מַרְגִּישׁ כְּאִילּוּ הוּא גַּלְגַּל חֲמִישִׁי.
Some people accept invitations to go out with couples without thinking much about it, only to later realize they feel like a fifth wheel. Others, however, intentionally push their way in and ask to join, not minding the fact that they are a fifth wheel.
אָז יֵשׁ כָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁהוּזְמְנוּ לָצֵאת עִם זוּג וְהִסְכִּימוּ לְכָךְ בְּלִי לַחֲשׁוֹב הַרְבֵּה, וְרַק אַחַר כָּךְ הֵם מַרְגִּישִׁים כְּמוֹ "גַּלְגַּל חֲמִישִׁי", אֲבָל יֵשׁ כָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁ'נִדְחָפִים' וּמְבַקְּשִׁים לְהִצְטָרֵף וְלֹא אִכְפַּת לָהֶם לִהְיוֹת "גַּלְגַּל חֲמִישִׁי".
Similarly, if you’re part of a sports team but the coach doesn't let you play, leaving you sitting on the bench for the entire game, you would surely feel like a fifth wheel.
גַּם אִם אַתֶּם שַׂחְקָנִים בִּקְבוּצָה, אֲבָל הַמְּאַמֵּן לֹא נוֹתֵן לָכֶם לְ הִשְׁתַּתֵּף בַּמִּשְׂחָק, אֶלָּא אַתֶּם יוֹשְׁבִים לְכָל אוֹרֶךְ הַמִּשְׂחָק עַל הַסַּפְסָל, בְּוַדַּאי, תַּרְגִּישׁוּ כְּמוֹ "גַּלְגַּל חֲמִישִׁי".
