Jerusalem Liberation Day
During the Six-Day War, the battle for Jerusalem was one of the most central and significant battles. The IDF fought against the Jordanian army, which had controlled East Jerusalem since 1948.
בְּמַהֲלַךְ מִלְחֶמֶת שֵׁשֶׁת הַיָּמִים, הַקְּרָב עַל יְרוּשָׁלַיִם הָיָה אֶחָד הַקְּרָבוֹת הַמֶּרְכָּזִיִּים וְהַמַּשְׁמָעוּתִיִּים בְּיוֹתֵר. צה"ל נִלְחַם נֶגֶד הַצָּבָא הַיַּרְדֵּנִי, שֶׁשָּׁלַט בְּמִזְרַח יְרוּשָׁלַיִם מֵאָז 1948.
The battle for Jerusalem was difficult, and 182 Israeli soldiers lost their lives.
הַקְּרָב עַל יְרוּשָׁלַיִם הָיָה קָשֶׁה וּבְמַהֲלָכוֹ נֶהֶרְגוּ 182 חַיָּלִים יִשְׂרְאֵלִיִּים.
One of the most important battles was the Battle of Givat – HaTachmoshet, where paratroopers fought in fortified trenches against a strong Jordanian force. The battle was extremely tough, involving close combat and heavy losses, but in the end, the paratroopers succeeded in capturing the hill.
אֶחָד הַקְּרָבוֹת הַחֲשׁוּבִים הָיָה הַקְּרָב עַל גִּבְעַת הַתַּחְמוֹשֶׁת, שֶׁבּוֹ לוֹחֲמֵי חֲטִיבַת הַצַּנְחָנִים נִלְחֲמוּ בִּתְעָלוֹת מְבוּצָּרוֹת מוּל כּוֹחַ יַרְדֵּנִי חָזָק. הַקְּרָב הָיָה קָשֶׁה מְאוֹד, עִם לְחִימָה מִטְּוָח קָצָר וַאֲבֵדוֹת רַבּוֹת, אַךְ בְּסוֹפוֹ שֶׁל דָּבָר הִצְלִיחוּ הַצַּנְחָנִים לִכְבּוֹשׁ אֶת הַגִּבְעָה.
Another battle took place at Armon HaNatsiv, where Jordanian forces attempted to seize the compound, but the Jerusalem Brigade managed to repel them and recapture the area.
קְרָב נוֹסָף הִתְרַחֵשׁ בְּאַרְמוֹן הַנָּצִיב, שֶׁבּוֹ כּוֹחוֹת יַרְדֵּנִיִּ ים נִסּוּ לְהִשְׁתַּלֵּט עַל הַמִּתְחָם, אַךְ חֲטִיבַת יְרוּשָׁלַיִם הִצְלִיחָה לַהֲדוֹף אוֹתָם וְלִכְבּוֹשׁ אֶת הָאֵזוֹר מֵחָדָשׁ.
Another force from the Jerusalem Brigade simultaneously entered the Old City from the south through Dung Gate, taking control of the Jewish Quarter.
כּוֹחַ אַחֵר שֶׁל חֲטִיבַת יְרוּשָׁלַיִם נִכְנַס בְּמַקְבִּיל לָעִיר הָעַתִּיקָה מִכִּיוּוּן דָּרוֹם, דֶּרֶךְ שַׁעַר הָאַשְׁפּוֹת, וְהִשְׁתַּלֵּט עַל הָרוֹבַע הַיְּהוּדִי.
The entrance through Dung Gate was part of the strategy to capture the Old City, alongside Paratrooper Brigade 55, which entered through Lion’s Gate.
הַכְּנִיסָה דֶּרֶךְ שַׁעַר הָאַשְׁפּוֹת הָיְתָה חֵלֶק מֵהַמַּהֲלָךְ לְכִיבּוּשׁ הָעִיר הָעַתִּיקָה, לְצַד חֲטִיבַת הַצַּנְחָנִים 55, שֶׁנִּכְנְסָה דֶּרֶךְ שַׁעַר הָאֲרָיוֹת.
The most emotional moment came when the paratroopers broke through Lion’s Gate, entered the Old City, and reached the Western Wall, where they raised the Israeli flag.
הָרֶגַע הַמְּרַגֵּשׁ בְּיוֹתֵר הָיָה כַּאֲשֶׁר חֲטִיבַת הַצַּנְחָנִים פָּרְצָה דֶּרֶךְ שַׁעַר הָאֲרָיוֹת, נִכְנְסָה לָעִיר הָעַתִּיקָה, וְהִגִּיעָה אֶל הַכּוֹתֶל הַמַּעֲרָבִי, שָׁם הֵנִיפוּ אֶת דֶּגֶל יִשְׂרָאֵל.
The Chief Military Rabbi, Shlomo Goren, arrived at the Western Wall with the soldiers, blew the shofar, and recited the "Shehecheyanu" blessing, marking a historic moment in Israel’s history.
הָרַב הַצְּבָאִי הָרָאשִׁי, שְׁלֹמֹה גֹּרֶן, הִגִּיעַ אֶל הַכּוֹתֶל עִם הַלּוֹחֲמִים, תָּקַע בְּשׁוֹפָר, וּבֵרֵךְ "שֶׁהֶחֱיָנוּ", מָה שֶׁהָפַךְ לְרֶגַע סִמְלִי בְּתוֹלְדוֹת יִשְׂרָאֵל.
After the war, Jerusalem became a unified city under Israeli rule, and the Knesset declared the 28th of Iyar as a national day known as "Jerusalem Day," celebrating the city’s reunification.
לְאַחַר הַמִּלְחָמָה, יְרוּשָׁלַיִם הָפְכָה לְעִיר מְאוּחֶדֶת תַּחַת שִׁלְטוֹן יִשְׂרְאֵלִי, וְהַכְּנֶסֶת קָבְעָה אֶת כ"ח בְּאִיָּר כְּיוֹם חַג לְאוּמִּי בְּשֵׁם "יוֹם יְרוּשָׁלַיִם", לְצִיּוּן הָאִיחוּד.
