A white night
A white night is a night without sleep.
לַיְלָה לָבָן הוּא לַיְלָה לְלֹא שֵׁינָה.
The origin of the expression is from a phenomenon that occurs in various places in the world where the sun sets for a very short time and there is no real darkness.
מְקוֹר הַבִּיטּוּי הוּא מִתּוֹפָעָה הַמִּתְרַחֶשֶׁת בִּמְקוֹמוֹת שׁוֹנִים בָּעוֹלָם שֶׁבָּהֶם הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ שׁוֹקַעַת לִזְמַן קָצָר מְאוֹד וְאֵין בֶּאֱמֶת חוֹשֶׁךְ.
We know that when darkness falls, melatonin (the sleep hormone) is released in our bodies and if darkness does not fall, some people cannot sleep.
אֲנַחְנוּ יוֹדְעִים שֶׁכַּאֲשֶׁר יוֹרֵד הַחוֹשֶׁךְ מִשְׁתַּחְרֵר אֶצְלֵנוּ בַּגּוּף מֶלָטוֹנִין (הוֹרְמוֹן הַשֵּׁינָה) וְאִם לֹא יוֹרֵד הַחוֹשֶׁךְ, יֵשׁ כָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁלֹּא יְכוֹלִים לִישׁוֹן.
If I stayed up all night because I had to study for a test, I can say "I had a white night".
There are various festivals around the world called "white nights" and they have activities throughout the night.
אִם נִשְׁאַרְתִּי עֵרָה כָּל הַלַּיְלָה כִּי הָיִיתִי צְרִיכָה לִלְמוֹד לְמִבְחָן, אֲנִי יְכוֹלָה לְהַגִּיד "הָיָה לִי לַיְלָה לָבָן".
יֵשׁ פֶסְטִיבָלִים שׁוֹנִים בְּרַחֲבֵי הָעוֹלָם שֶׁנִּקְרָאִים "לֵילוֹת לְבָנִים" וְיֵשׁ בָּהֶם פְּעִילוּיוֹת בְּמֶשֶׁךְ כָּל הַלַּיְלָה.
