Heads or tails
This expression is equivalent to the English expression Heads or tails.
הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה מַקְבִּיל לַבִּיטּוּי Heads or tails בְּאַנְגְּלִית.
If we want to decide on a topic that is not so important, for example: What will we eat today? One wants pizza and the other wants pasta?
How will we make the decision?
אִם אֲנַחְנוּ רוֹצִים לְהַחְלִיט בְּנוֹשֵׂא שֶׁהוּא לֹא כָּל כָּךְ חָשׁוּב, לְמָשָׁל: מָה נֹאכַל הַיּוֹם? אֶחָד רוֹצֶה פִּיצָה וְהַשֵּׁנִי רוֹצֶה פַּסְטָה?אֵיךְ נַכְרִיעַ (נְקַבֵּל אֶת הַהַחְלָטָה?)We can toss a coin.
One will choose heads and the other will choose tails and the side on which the coin falls is the winner.
אֶפְשָׁר לְהַטִּיל (לִזְרוֹק) מַטְבֵּעַ.אֶחָד יִבְחַר עֵץ וְהַשֵּׁנִי יִבְחַר פָּלִי וְהַצַּד שֶׁעָלָיו יִפֹּל הַמַּטְבֵּעַ הוּא הַזּוֹכֶה.The origin of this expression is from the mill coin during the British Mandate in Israel.
On one side of the coin was a branch – this is the tree and on the other side it was written Palestine (א"י) this is the 'tail'.
מְקוֹר הַבִּיטּוּי 'עֵץ אוֹ פָּלִי' הוּא מִמַּטְבֵּעַ הַמִּיל בִּזְמַן שֶׁהָיָה מַנְדָּט בְּרִיטִי בְּאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל.
בְּצִדּוֹ הָאֶחָד שֶׁל הַמַּטְבֵּעַ הָיָה עָנָף – זֶהוּ הָעֵץ וּבַצַּד הַשֵּׁנִי הָיָה כָּתוּב פָּלֶשְׂתִּינָה (א"י) זֶהוּ הַ'פָּלִי.'
