Sometimes I look at some of our members of Knesset, who speak against our country, and I think to myself: Don't they understand that they are cutting off the branch on which they are sitting?
Furthermore, there are members of Knesset and even judges who break the law. They represent the law and the public expects them to be the first to obey the law.
I think this is true not only in the State of Israel and certainly not only for members of Knesset.

Cuts the branch he is sitting on
לִפְעָמִים אֲנִי מִסְתַּכֶּלֶת עַל חֵלֶק מֵחַבְרֵי הַכְּנֶסֶת שֶׁלָּנוּ, שֶׁמְּדַבְּרִים נֶגֶד הַמְּדִינָה שֶׁלָּנוּ וַאֲנִי חוֹשֶׁבֶת לְעַצְמִי: הַאִם הֵם לֹא מְבִינִים שֶׁהֵם כּוֹרְתִים אֶת הֶעָנָף שֶׁעָלָיו הֵם יוֹשְׁבִים?
יְתֵרָה מִזֹּאת, יֵשׁ חַבְרֵי כְּנֶסֶת וַאֲפִילּוּ שׁוֹפְטִים שֶׁעוֹבְרִים עַל הַחוֹק. הֵם מְיַצְּגִים אֶת הַחוֹק וְהַצִּיבּוּר מְצַפֶּה מֵהֶם לִהְיוֹת הָרִאשׁוֹנִים שֶׁמְּצַיְּתִים לַחוֹק.
אֲנִי חוֹשֶׁבֶת שֶׁזֶּה נָכוֹן לֹא רַק בִּמְדִינַת יִשְׂרָאֵל וּבְוַדַּאי לֹא רַק לְגַבֵּי חַבְרֵי כְּנֶסֶת.
This expression wants to tell us that if you benefit from some source, for example: a country, an organization or a workplace, it is not worth going against that source because that would be like cutting off the branch on which you are sitting.
הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה רוֹצֶה לְהַגִּיד לָנוּ שֶׁאִם אַתָּה מֵפִיק תּוֹעֶלֶת מִמָּקוֹר כָּלְשֶׁהוּא, לְמָשָׁל: מְדִינָה, אִרְגּוּן כָּלְשֶׁהוּא אוֹ מְקוֹם עֲבוֹדָה, לֹא כְּדַאי לָצֵאת נֶגֶד אוֹתוֹ מָקוֹר כִּי זֶה יִהְיֶה בִּבְחִינַת: לִכְרוֹת אֶת הֶעָנָף עָלָיו אַתָּה יוֹשֵׁב.
