A log is a part of a tree that comes out of the ground. When we see a thick log, we know that the tree is old. If we cut the log, we will see rings. With the help of the rings, we can know how old the tree is.

הַגֶּזַע הוּא חֵלֶק הָעֵץ שֶׁיּוֹצֵא מִתּוֹךְ הָאֲדָמָה. כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ רוֹאִים גֶּזַע עָבֶה, אֲנַחְנוּ יוֹדְעִים שֶׁהָעֵץ הוּא עַתִּיק. אִם נַחְתּוֹךְ אֶת הַגֶּזַע נִרְאֶה טַבָּעוֹת. בְּעֶזְרַת הַטַּבָּעוֹת נוּכַל לָדַעַת בֵּן כַּמָּה הָעֵץ.

The word log also refers to a group that has common characteristics. We can talk about different breeds of dogs. For example:
