Ladybug
The ladybug(known in Hebrew as "Parat Moshe Rabbeinu") is a red beetle with black spots on its back.
פָּרַת מֹשֶׁה רַבֵּנוּ הִיא חִיפּוּשִׁית אֲדוּמָּה שֶׁיֵּשׁ לָהּ נְקוּדּוֹת שְׁחוֹרוֹת עַל הַגַּב.
In Spanish, it is called "the cow of Saint Anthony." In German, it is referred to as "Mary's beetle." In various Slavic languages, it is known as "the little cow of God."
בִּסְפָרַדִּית קוֹרְאִים לָהּ "הַפָּרָה שֶׁל אַנְטוֹנְיוֹס הַקָּדוֹשׁ".
בְּגֶרְמָנִית קוֹרְאִים לָהּ "חִיפּוּשִׁית מִרְיָם" בְּשָׂפוֹת סְלָוִיּוֹת שׁוֹנוֹת קוֹרְאִים לָהּ "פָּרַת הָאֱלֹהִים הַקְּטַנָּה".
In Yiddish, it goes by the names "Moshe Rabbeinu’s keeleh" or "Moshe Rabbeinu’s ferdel" (a small cow or little horse of Moses). The Hebrew name is a direct translation from Yiddish.
בְּיִידִישׁ קוֹרְאִים לָהּ "מֹשֶׁה-רַבֵּנוּ'ס-קִיעְלֶע" אוֹ "מֹשֶׁה-רַבֵּנוּ'ס-פערדעלע" (פָּרָה קְטַנָּה אוֹ סוּסוֹן שֶׁל מֹשֶׁה רַבֵּנוּ).
וְהַשֵּׁם בְּעִבְרִית הוּא תַּרְגּוּם יָשִׁיר מִיִּידִישׁ.
Why is it associated with a cow? No one really knows...
Its scientific Hebrew name, however, is Mosheet HaSheva (The Seven-Spotted Ladybug), referring to the seven black spots on its back.
