LISHPOCH ET HA-TINOK IM HA-MAYIM
Throw out the baby with the bathwater
We use this expression when we have something great and valuable but, due to minor flaws, we choose to discard it entirely.
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה כַּאֲשֶׁר יֵשׁ לָנוּ מַשֶּׁהוּ גָּדוֹל טוֹב, אֲבָל בִּגְלַל דְּבָרִים קְטַנִּים לֹא טוֹבִים שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ אֲנַחְנוּ מַעֲדִיפִים לְוַתֵּר עָלָיו.
For example: I prepared a large project that took me a lot of time, but I didn’t manage to check a few details before the submission deadline. In the end, I decided not to submit it at all.
לְמָשָׁל: הֵכַנְתִּי עֲבוֹדָה גְּדוֹלָה וְלָקַח לִי הַרְבֵּה זְמַן לְהָכִין אוֹתָהּ, אֲבָל לֹא הִסְפַּקְתִּי לִבְדּוֹק כַּמָּה דְּבָרִים עַד לְתַאֲרִיךְ הַהַגָּשָׁה וּבְסוֹפוֹ שֶׁל דָּבָר הֶחְלַטְתִּי לֹא לְהַגִּישׁ אוֹתָהּ.
If I had submitted it with the gaps, I might have received a slightly lower grade, but by not submitting it, I likely ended up with a zero. In this case, I threw out the baby with the bathwater.
לוּ הָיִיתִי מַגִּישָׁה עִם הָחוׄסָרִים אוּלַי הָיִיתִי מְקַבֶּלֶת צִיּוּן נָמוּךְ מְעַט, אֲבָל אִם הֶחְלַטְתִּי לֹא לְהַגִּישׁ אֲנִי כַּנִּרְאֶה אֲקַבֵּל 'אֶפֶס'. אָז שָׁפַכְתִּי אֶת הַתִּינוֹק עִם הַמַּיִם.
The main message of this expression is one of caution and criticism. If there are small issues that need attention—deal with them, but don’t abandon the whole valuable thing because of them.
הַמֶּסֶר הָעִיקָּרִי שֶׁהַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה רוֹצֶה לְהַעֲבִיר לָנוּ הוּא מֶסֶר שֶׁל אַזְהָרָה וּבִיקּוֹרֶת. אִם יֵשׁ דְּבָרִים קְטַנִּים שֶׁצָּרִיךְ לְטַפֵּל בָּהֶם – עָשׂוּ זֹאת וְאַל תְּוַתְּרוּ עַל הַדָּבָר הַגָּדוֹל בִּגְלָלָם.
