Extermination camp

The expression "extermination camp" consists of two words: The word "camp" comes from the Hebrew root ח.נ.ה , related to the verb "to encamp" (לַחֲנוֹת). Its meaning refers to arriving at a certain place, usually in nature, and stopping there for a defined period, whether short or long.

הַבִּיטּוּי 'מַחֲנֵה הַשְׁמָדָה' מוּרְכָּב מִשְּׁתֵּי מִילִּים:

הַמִּילָּה 'מַחֲנֶה' – מֵהַשּׁוֹרֶשׁ ח.נ.ה. שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל: לַחֲנוׄת. מַשְׁמָעוּתָהּ לְהַגִּיעַ לְמָקוֹם מְסוּיָּם, לָרוׄב מָקוֹם בַּטֶּבַע, וְלַעֲצוֹר שָׁם לִשְׁהִיָּה שֶׁל תְּקוּפָה מְסוּיֶּמֶת: קְצָרָה אוֹ אֲרוּכָּה.

The word "extermination" comes from the Hebrew root ש.מ.ד , in Binyan Hif'il (grammatical structure). This root also appears in the expression "religious persecution decrees" (גזירות שמד), which the Jewish people have faced throughout history.

הַמִּילָּה הַשְׁמָדָה – שׁוֹרֶשׁ ש.מ.ד, בִּנְיָן הִפְעִיל. שֵׁם פְּעוּלָּה. הַשּׁוֹרֶשׁ ש.מ.ד קַיָּם גַּם בַּבִּיטּוּי "גְּזֵרוׄת שְׁמָד" שֶׁהָעָם הַיְּהוּדִי חָוָה בְּמַהֲלַךְ הַהִיסְטוֹרְיָה.

For example, the decrees of Hadrian and Antiochus, which prohibited Jews from practicing their religion, or the persecution in Spain, which forced Jews to convert to Christianity.

לְדוּגְמָא: גְּזֵרוֹת הַשְּׁמַד שֶׁל אַדְרִיאָנוּס וְאַנְטִיּוֹכוּס שֶׁאָסְרוּ עַל הַיְּהוּדִים לַעֲסוֹק בַּדָּת. אוֹ גְּזֵרוֹת הַשְּׁמַד שֶׁל מַלְכוּת סְפָרַד שֶׁכָּפְתָה עַל הַיְּהוּדִים לְהָמִיר אֶת דָּתָם לַנַּצְרוּת.

Extermination means total destruction. We are also familiar with the term "weapons of mass destruction", which refers to nuclear atomic bombs. There is great fear that whoever succeeds in developing such a bomb could dominate the world.

הַשְׁמָדָה פֵּירוּשָׁהּ חִיסּוּל מוּחְלָט.

אֲנַחְנוּ מַכִּירִים אֶת הַבִּיטּוּי "נֶשֶׁק לְהַשְׁמָדָה הֲמוֹנִית" שֶׁמִּתְיַחֵס לִפְצָצַת אָטוֹם גַּרְעִינִית. אֲנַחְנוּ מְפַחֲדִים מְאוֹד שֶׁמִּי שֶׁיַּצְלִיחַ לְפַתֵּחַ פְּצָצָה כָּזוֹ יִשְׁלוֹט בָּעוֹלָם.

1. An extermination camp was a facility established by Nazi Germany during World War II for the purpose of exterminating Jews, according to decisions made by the Nazi government. The extermination of Jews was referred to by the Germans as "the Final Solution".
