Destruction
The root of the word 'חוּרְבַּן' (destruction) is ח.ר.ב. To destroy means to ruin or demolish.
שׁוֹרֶשׁ הַמִּילָּה 'חוּרְבַּן' הוּא ח.ר.ב.
לְהַחֲרִיב פֵּירוּשׁוֹ לַהֲרוֹס.
We use the word 'חוּרְבַּן' to describe the destruction of the Temples — that is, the collapse of walls, the destruction of sacred vessels used in Temple service, the burning of scrolls, tables, and chairs that served as furnishings in the Temple.
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּמִּילָּה חוּרְבַּן כְּדֵי לְתָאֵר אֶת הַהֶרֶס שֶׁל בָּתֵּי הַמִּקְדָּשׁ,

We also recognize scenes of 'חוּרְבַּן' following wars — for example, during World War II, when bombs were dropped from planes onto populated areas.
אֲנַחְנוּ מַכִּירִים מַרְאוֹת שֶׁל חוּרְבַּן גַּם אַחֲרֵי מִלְחָמוֹת. לְדוּגְמָא בְּמִלְחֶמֶת הָעוֹלָם הַשְּׁנִיָּה כַּאֲשֶׁר הֵטִילוּ פְּצָצוֹת מִמְּטוֹסִים עַל אֵיזּוֺרִים שֶׁגָּרִים בָּהֶם אֲנָשִׁים.
Unfortunately, part of the destruction includes the loss of human life, as people are harmed by the actions carried out during the course of such 'חוּרְבַּן'.
