Lightning
Thunder is the loud noise that follows lightning.
הָרַעַם הוּא הָרַעַשׁ הַגָּדוֹל שֶׁמַּגִּיעַ אַחֲרֵי הַבָּרָק.
The sound of thunder varies depending on how far away we are from the place where the lightning struck. When the lightning is very close, we hear thunder like a very loud explosion. As the distance increases, we hear thunder as a rolling continuous noise.
הַצְּלִיל שֶׁל הָרַעַם מִשְׁתַּנֶּה בְּהֶתְאֵם לַמֶּרְחָק שֶׁבּוֹ אֲנַחְנוּ נִמְצָאִים מִמְּקוֹם הַפְּגִיעָה שֶׁל הַבָּרָק. כַּאֲשֶׁר הַבָּרָק קָרוֹב מְאוֹד, אֲנַחְנוּ נִשְׁמַע אֶת הָרַעַם כְּפִיצוּץ חָזָק מְאוֹד. כַּאֲשֶׁר הַמֶּרְחָק גָּדוֹל יוֹתֵר, אֲנַחְנוּ נִשְׁמַע אֶת הָרַעַם כְּרַעַשׁ מִתְמַשֵּׁךְ וּמִתְגַּלְגֵּל.
Lightning and thunder are produced together, but when we talk about the effect of lightning we are talking about the speed of light, and when we talk about thunder we are talking about the speed of sound.
לְמַעֲשֶׂה, הַבָּרָק וְהָרַעַם מוֹפִיעִים בְּיַחַד, אֲבָל כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ מְדַבְּרִים עַל הוֹפָעַת הַבָּרָק אֲנַחְנוּ מְדַבְּרִים עַל מְהִירוּת הָאוֹר, וְכַאֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ מְדַבְּרִים עַל הָרַעַם אֲנַחְנוּ מְדַבְּרִים עַל מְהִירוּת הַקּוֹל.
The speed of light is faster than the speed of sound, which is why we see lightning before we hear thunder.
מְהִירוּת הָאוֹר גְּבוֹהָה יוֹתֵר מִמְּהִירוּת הַקּוֹל וְזֹאת הַסִּיבָּה שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ רוֹאִים אֶת הַבָּרָק לִפְנֵי שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ שׁוֹמְעִים אֶת הָרַעַם.
