The word "ma'ala" (מַעֲלָה) comes from the Hebrew root ע.ל.ה, infinitive: “la'alot” meaning “to go up” — that is, to move from a lower place to a higher one.
הַ מִּילָּה 'מַעֲלָה' בָּאָה מֵהַשּׁוֹרֶשׁ ע.ל.ה. שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל: לַעֲלוֹת, שֶׁפֵּירוּשׁוֹ לַעֲבוֹר מִמָּקוֹם נָמוּךְ לְמָקוֹם גָּבוֹהַּ.
One of the meanings of the word ma'alot is stairs or steps, which help us ascend from a low place to a higher one — a logical connection!
אַחַת הַמַּשְׁמָעוּיוֹת שֶׁל הַמִּילָּה מַעֲלוֹת הִיא מַדְרֵגוֹת שֶׁבְּאֶמְצָעוּתָן אֲנַחְנוּ יְכוֹלִים לַעֲלוֹת מִמָּקוֹם נָמוּךְ לְמָקוֹם גָּבוֹהַּ. הֶגְיוֹנִי.
But we also use the word ma'alot in the context of temperature, where it refers to the units used to measure heat.
אֲבָל אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּמִּילָּה מַעֲלוֹת גַּם בַּהֶקְשֵׁר שֶׁל חוֹם וְאָז הַמִּילָּה מַעֲלוֹת מְצַיֶּנֶת יְחִידוֹת שֶׁבְּאֶמְצָעוּתָן אֲנַחְנוּ מוֹדְדִים אֶת הַחוֹם.
