Beach\shore

The word “חוֹף” means the strip of land that touches — or borders — the sea. Spending time at the beach is an activity that many people enjoy in the summer. People love sitting on the beach, sunbathing, playing, and having fun with family or friends.

חוֹף הוּא הַשֶּׁטַח הַנּוֹשֵׁק (הַצָּמוּד) לַיָּם.

בִּילּוּי בְּחוֹף הַיָּם הוּא פְּעִילוּת שֶׁהַרְבֵּה מְאוֹד אֲנָשִׁים אוֹהֲבִים לַעֲשׂוֹת בַּקַּיִץ. אֲנָשִׁים אוֹהֲבִים לָשֶׁבֶת עַל חוֹף הַיָּם, לְהִשְׁתַּזֵּף לְשַׂחֵק וְלֵהָנוֹת עִם הַמִּשְׁפָּחָה אוֹ עִם חֲבֵרִים.

In Israel, there’s an area called the “Coastal Plain” (Mishor HaḤof), which includes all the land bordering the Mediterranean Sea, from the north to the south.

יֵשׁ לָנוּ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל אֵיזוֹר הַנִּקְרָא "מִישׁוֹר הַחוֹף". הָאֵיזוֹר הַזֶּה הוּא כָּל הַשֶּׁטַח הַנִּמְצָא לְחוֹף הַיָּם הַתִּיכוֹן מֵהַצָּפוֹן עַד הַדָּרוֹם.

So, in Israel we have the entire Mediterranean coastline, we have all the beaches around the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee), we have beaches bordering the Dead Sea, and we also have a beach in Eilat that touches the Red Sea.

אָז בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל יֵשׁ לָנוּ אֶת כָּל רְצוּעַת הַחוֹף הַנּוֹשֶׁקֶת לַיָּם הַתִּיכוֹן.

יֵשׁ לָנוּ אֶת כָּל הַחוֹפִים מִסָּבִיב לַכִּנֶּרֶת.

יֵשׁ לָנוּ חוֹפִים בְּיָם הַמֶּלַח.

וְגַם בְּאֵילַת יֵשׁ לָנוּ חוֹף הַנּוֹשֵׁק לַיָּם הָאָדוֹם.

There’s also an important Hebrew expression: “ḥof mivtaḥim” — literally “a shore of safety.” If someone is said to be “at a ḥof mivtaḥim,” it means they’re in a safe, protected place. We use the phrase “higia leḥof mivtaḥim” (“reached a safe shore”) in many situations — for example, someone recovering from a serious illness or accident, or even someone who was hired for a good job.

יֵשׁ לָנוּ גַּם בִּיטּוּי חָשׁוּב בְּעִבְרִית: "חוֹף מִבְטָחִים".

אִם אַתָּה נִמְצָא בְּחוֹף מִבְטָחִים זֶה אוֹמֵר שֶׁאַתָּה נִמְצָא בְּמָקוֹם בָּטוּחַ וְאֵין סַכָּנָה.

אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי: "הִגִּיעַ לְחוֹף מִבְטָחִים" בְּכָל מִינֵי מִקְרִים: אִם לְמָשָׁל אָדָם הִבְרִיא מִמַּחֲלָה קָשָׁה אוֹ עָבַר תְּאוּנָה וְיָצָא מִזֶּה אוֹ אֲפִילּוּ אָדָם שֶׁהִתְקַבֵּל לַעֲבוֹדָה טוֹבָה.

1. The girl built a big sandcastle on the beach and decorated it with colorful seashells she found.

2. We went away for the weekend to a hotel in Tiberias. The hotel was located right on the shores of the Kinneret.

2. נָסַעְנוּ לְסוֹף שָׁבוּעַ לְבֵית מָלוֹן בִּטְבֶרְיָה. בֵּית הַמָּלוֹן נִמְצָא עַל חוֹף הַכִּנֶּרֶת.

3. After a long workday, he went for a walk on the beach to relax and breathe some fresh air.

3. אַחֲרֵי יוֹם עֲבוֹדָה אָרוֹךְ, הוּא הָלַךְ לְטַיֵּל עַל הַחוֹף, כְּדֵי לְהֵרָגַע וְלִנְשׁוֹם אֲוִיר צַח.

4. At a restaurant by the beach, they ate fresh fish and watched the beautiful sunset.
