Parasol
The word “shimshiyah” (parasol) is a modern Hebrew term coined by Eliezer Ben-Yehuda. As you may notice, the word shemesh (sun) appears inside shimshiyah — that was exactly Ben-Yehuda’s intention when he created it.
הַמִּילָּה 'שִׁמְשִׁיָּה' הִיא מֵחִידּוּשֵׁי הַשָּׂפָה שֶׁל אֱלִיעֶזֶר בֵּן יְהוּדָה. אַתֶּם, בְּוַדַּאי, רוֹאִים אֵת הַמִּילָּה 'שֶׁמֶשׁ' בְּתוֹךְ הַמִּילָּה הַזֹּאת וְזֹאת הָיְתָה כַּוָּנָתוֹ שֶׁל אֱלִיעֶזֶר בֶּן יְהוּדָה כְּשֶׁהוּא יָצַר אֵת הַמִּילָּה.
He took the word “shemesh” (sun) and added the suffix “-iyah”, resulting in shimshiyah. In the same way, the Hebrew word “mitriyah” (umbrella) was formed from matar (rain) + -iyah, meaning an item that protects us from rain. Similarly, a shimshiyah is an item that protects us from the sun.
הוּא לָקַח אֶת הַמִּילָּה 'שֶׁמֶשׁ' וְהוֹסִיף לָהּ אֶת הַתּוֹסֶפֶת 'יָה' וְקִבַּלְנוּ שִׁמְשִׁיָּה.
כָּךְ גַּם נוֹצְרָה הַמִּילָּה 'מִטְרִיָּה' (Umbrella). הַמִּילָּה מָטַר = גֶּשֶׁם + הַתּוֹסֶפֶת 'יָה' וְקִבַּלְנוּ מִ טְרִיָּה שֶׁפֵּרוּשׁוֹ פָּרִיט שֶׁמֵּגֵן עָלֵינוּ מִפְּנֵי הַגֶּשֶׁם.
כָּאָמוּר גַּם הַשִּׁמְשִׁיָּה הִיא פָּרִיט שֶׁמֵּגֵן עָלֵינוּ מִפְּנֵי הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ.
Some people place a shimshiyah in their garden — in that case, it stands in a fixed, heavy base so it won’t fly away or move. But a beach parasol is typically portable and lightweight, made to be carried and easily set up.
יֵשׁ אֲנָשִׁים שֶׁשָּׂמִים שִׁמְשִׁיָּה בַּגִּינָּה שֶׁלָּהֶם. בְּמִקְרֶה כָּזֶה הַשִּׁמְשִׁיָּה עוֹמֶדֶת בְּתוֹךְ בָּסִיס קָבוּעַ וְחָזָק כְּדֵי שֶׁלֹּא תָּעוּף וְלֹא תָּזוּז. אֲבָל שִׁמְשִׁיָּה שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בְּחוֹף הַיָּם הִיא שִׁמְשִׁיָּה נַיֶּדֶת וְקַלָּה לִנְשִׂיאָה.
So when the sun is too strong at the beach, and you don’t want to get too tanned — or worse, sunburned — sit under a parasol and stay protected.
אָז כְּשֶׁהַשֶּׁמֶשׁ חֲזָקָה מִדַּי בְּחוֹף הַיָּם וְאַתֶּם לֹא רוֹצִים לְהִשְׁתַּזֵּף וּבְהֶחְלֵט שֶׁלֹּא לְהִשָּׂרֵף, שְׁבוּ מִתַּחַת לַשִּׁמְשִׁיָּה וַהֲגֵנּוּ עַל עַצְמְכֶם.
Here are a few sentences using the word shimshiyah:
הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם הַמִּילָּה 'שִׁמְשִׁיָּה':
1. At the beachfront restaurant, there was a parasol by every table to provide shade and comfort for the diners.
1. בְּמִסְעֶדֶת הַחוֹף, לְיַד כָּל שׁוּלְחָן הָיְתָה שִׁמְשִׁיָּה, כְּדֵי לְסַפֵּק צֵל וְנוֹחוּת לַסּוֹעֲדִים.
2. By the hotel pool, parasols were placed so guests who didn’t want to sit in the sun could still relax by the water.
2. עַל שְׂפַת הַבְּרֵיכָה בַּמָּלוֹן הִצִּיבוּ שִׁמְשִׁיּוֹת כְּדֵי שֶׁאוֹרְחִים שֶׁלֹּא רוֹצִים לָשֶׁבֶת בַּשֶּׁמֶשׁ יוּכְלוּ גַּם לָשֶׁבֶת עַל שְׂפַת הַבְּרֵיכָה.
3. On Saturday morning, the beach was filled with colorful parasols.
3. בְּשַׁבָּת בַּבּוֹקֶר חוֹף הַיָּם הָיָה מָלֵא בְּשִׁמְשִׁיּוֹת צִבְעוֹנִיּוֹת.
4. If you don’t have a parasol at home, you can rent one at the beach — and you can also rent a comfy chair.
4. אִם אֵין לָכֶם שִׁמְשִׁיָּה בַּבַּיִת, אֶפְשָׁר לִשְׂכּוֹר בְּחוֹף הַיָּם. אֶפְשָׁר גַּם לִשְׂכּוֹר כִּסְּאוֹת נוֹחַ.
